William H Farrell and family appear in the 1872 census in Muskoka, Muskoka, Ontario. His widow and children appear in Otter Lake, Quebec in the 1881 census. I am seeking any information about what became of William Henry Farrell.

I found a William Farrell, 42, on 1881 census in Portsmouth Frontenac Ontario. That is the Kingston Pen. Born Quebec, Catholic, irish, married, Carpenter.
As you found in 1881 census that Mary is a classified as a widow in Leslie Pontiac PQ with the children. The youngest two children were born in Quebec in 1876.
Family tree on Ancestry has his death as 1877? Muskoka?
Find a grave has a William Farrell buried in Kincardine. Note on site says interred Oct 4, 1877. There is no headstone picture. Flowers were left 8 Jan 2024 by Henry and Joanne Vinandy.
Kincardine is not in Muskoka but in Bruce County not too far away.
The name William Farrell is quite popular so hard to really say if the Kincardine one is him or not. Death certificates in 1877 were rather scarce in the north as the official only came around a couple of times a year to collect information re births, deaths and marriages.
Sometimes there is more information on the children’s marriage registration but no luck there with a death date for him.
Don’t think this is going to help you much. I didn’t find a death registration for him in Ontario or Quebec.

Thanks for looking. Pretty sure that “1877? Muskoka?” is my notes. What I know is that William’s youngest child was born in August 1878, so have narrowed down his death date to 1877-1881 when the census taker recorded the family in 1881. William is listed in the 1871 census as a Lumber Agent living in Muskoka Township, Muskoka District. I am currently combing through all cemeteries in the Muskoka District, but so far have not had any luck.
