A Surname Inquiry

Metcalfe, Sturley

Robin Sturley

 February 13, 2026

Irving J (James?) Sturley was my grandfather, I am interested in my family history on the Sturley side. He grew up going to Katrine, to his 'Uncle Charie's' house, who I believe was his mother's brother, and who's last name was Metcalfe. So I am also interested in knowing the family history going back on my great-grandmother Metcalfe's side.

    This is quite long.

** Mary Jane Metcalf Sturley died 1979 Colborne Northumberland Ontario Canada. On another site it say that she died in 1979 in Colborne Huron County and is buried in Colborne Cemetery. I have checked and there is no place named Colborne in Huron County but there is one in Northumberland County.
James Metcalfe, 28, of Ingersoll, b England, s/o William and Ann Metcalfe, married Maria Jane Rogerson, 25, of Ingersoll, d/o William and Margery Rogerson, witn: Richard Rogerson of Dorchester and Mary Bloor of Ingersoll, 23 Oct 1879 at Ingersol.

Buried Mt Pleasant Cemetery Toronto, plot 1464 owned by Walter P Wilson. A burial also at Mt Pleasant of a child Irwin Willson died 29 Dec 1918 at age 2 mths of pneumonia, child’s poor plot 378, burial Jan 7 1919. Note on death registration says ‘weak baby of a mother who died of influenza earlier”. Father William Willson of Burks Falls.
Francis William b 4 April 1888, Kearney, died 16 Aug 1940, New Toronto, buried Ontario Lakeshore Asylum Cemetery. Plot 10-43. He definitely is buried in that cemetery but apparently markers were not used at the time of his death. This information is supplied by K Martin. According to census he could not read or write. He is with his family on 1931 census in Armour. I cannot get into any files from the hospital due to privacy restrictions. If you are interested, you as a direct descendant, may be able to see his records. He entered the hospital between 1931 [on census at home] and 1940 [died]. The hospital was Toronto Hospital for the Insane and was generally known as 999 Queen Street. Just taking a guess here. Father died in 1938 so perhaps the family was unable to look after him. The hospital in Toronto was likely the closest facility to place him.
Charles Henry 4 Aug 1890, died 1973, buried Burks Falls Ont, [death regos not released for 1973 yet]. He is on headstone with Maria Jane, died 1948 [hard to read but death rego says 1948] and James H Metcalfe [cannot read death date] but his death registration says 1938.
Father listed as farmer. All children born in Bethune Tsp.

Neither of the sons married, just the two daughters one who died in 1918. Her children are living with grandparents on 1931 census.

This is from voter’s list and no personal information is given on these. According to headstone in St John’s Cemetery Dixie she died 1993. Looks like they always were in Dixie.

Then there were a couple of boarders.
They are living close to Kearney as there are a lot of Kearney names on the census and part of Kearney is in Bethune Tsp. [Only reason I know this is that is my home town].

Re James immigration. Another census says 1870 but the ink is bad so likely is 1879. 1879 makes more sense.

Can’t seem to find them on 1911 census. They should be either in Bethune or Armour Tsp. FINALLY, here they are. Spelling of last name on census is either Metcaffe or Metcalfee. It has been transcribed as Weteaffes. It is on Page 14, Line 40 Armour Twsp if you go looking for it.

A free site is http://www.familysearch.org That is the LDS site. It is easy to use.
I think this is all the Canadian information I could find for you.

I couldn’t find anything in England. It is a really common name and his place of birth in England is not coming up.
Hope this helps. If you want to know anything let me know through this site or satch42@bigpond.net.au
It’s been fun looking all this up.
