A Surname Inquiry
Nelson, Moore, Wainwright
Nelson, Joseph & Thursay (Theresa) Mahalia Moore & Ester (Essie/Essa) Wainwright
Can anyone help me? I am having one devil of a time finding info thru regular internet files for Joseph Nelson born abt 1836 in Canada and wife #1 Thursey (Theresa) Mahalia Moore b abt 1841 in USA, and their children (1)Isabella abt 1855-?, (2) William John 1858-1919 (I have quite a bit of info on him) (3) Joseph 1865-1968 (also have quite a bit of info on him) (4) Elizabeth Ann abt 1866-? (5) Martha Jane abt 1868-? (she married Charles Rogers in Toronto in 1889 and then I lose her) (6) Catherine N. Nelson 1870-? (7) Mary Mahalia 1873-?.
>>In 1861 census family lives in Seneca Twp, Haldimand Cty, Canada West
>>In 1871 census they live in Morrison, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada.
Somewhere between 1871 and 1881 I think Wife #1 died (I can’t find her death reg) and Joseph remarried to Ester/Essa/Essie Wainwright (b abt 1855 Ireland) abt 1877 (can’t find their marriage reg.). They have 2 children together: (1) Edith 1878-? (2) Thomas George 1880-?.
>>In 1881 census family lives in Gravenhurst, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada and Joseph is a Court Bailiff (has been in this occupation sometime before daughter Edith was born)
>>After 1881 I can’t seem to find most members of the family, except for William John (who stays in the Muskoka-Parry Sound area for life) and Joseph Jr. (who lives in Lambton Cty, Ontario for a time, then back to Parry-Sound-Muskoka for rest of his life).
I believe that Joseph Nelson Sr. is my GGG Uncle, brother of Susanna (Nelson) Duncan, and my GG Grandmother Isabella (Nelson) Robinson. They would all have been born in Esquesing Twp, Halton Cty, Ontario to John Nelson & Isabella Warren. Joseph & Thursey/Theresa lived right next door to Susanna & Thomas Duncan in 1861 & 1871 census, which leads me to believe that they were probably related and moved to Muskoka area together. Later, when my GG Grandfather, Samuel Robinson died, my GG Grandmother Isabella (Nelson) Robinson moved to Muskoka area as well—would make sense if she had siblings living there already.
Is anyone familiar with this family and can head me off in the right direction? I have searched in Lambton Cty, Ontario, where son Joseph Jr. lived for a time, but had no luck there. I found an Essie Nelson, age 65, living with her sister in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA in 1920 USA Census – she has been a widow of 2 years and immigrated to USA in 1882 and is naturalized (because birthplace listed as Ireland, can’t tell where she immigrated from—Ireland or Canada)
Much appreciation to anyone who can offer some assistance here.

Thank you very much for your assistance in my research on Susanna(h) (Nelson) Duncan – sister of Joseph Nelson and Isabella (Nelson) Robinson. I am trying to find more information on their parents, John Nelson and Isabella (Warren) Nelson. Susanna(h) Nelson is my GGG Grandma who was born in 1841 and died Oct 4, 1925 in Orillia (Simcoe). If you have any additional information, on the family, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
